Do you ever worry that one day your teen boy or girl may find themselves in a dangerous situation that they can’t physically handle? Harassed, bullied, threatened, or worse? Or do you want them to know how to recognize these types of situations as they are brewing and know how to best respond in order to escape unharmed and without violence? If you’re like me, your answer is “YES” and “YES!” And you’re going to want to read the rest of this page!Teens are adventurous and brave. They can be conscientious hard workers. They’re nearly always curious, and sometimes wise.
That word, SOMETIMES, is what is scary for us as parents. I mean, one day they can make us so proud – whether by making observations or decisions that seem brilliant for their age, or with caring and compassionate acts for the family or the community. Then, sometimes on the very same day, they will do or say something that makes us wonder, “What is going on inside this kid’s head????” It’s like they have two brains sometimes – one for wisdom and one for…well who knows?
That’s not to bash them. They don’t have the life experience you or I have, and these lapses are a normal part of development. But they sure are SCARY. We wonder:“Which brain is going to show up if my kid ends up in a tricky or dangerous situation?”And even if it is the “wise brain”, our kids, even at their wisest, are not seasoned enough to respond in the best way. See, to respond is to “think before acting”. And sometimes, even if the thinking leads to the right action, by the time the thinking is done, the window for action is gone, and it’s too late.
